Water, Essential for Rice Farming
Once presiding a consultation meeting, President Kim Il Sung pinpointed the main cause for the low yield of rice per hectare on Yonbaek Plain. It was the short supply of water. Then he made a detailed analysis of the cause.
He said: It is usually in June and July that the rice develops stems and comes into ears. At this time the rice plant can develop a lot of stems and grow healthily when there is a big difference in temperature between day and night. But as Yonbaek Plain is located in a warm region, the temperature that rises during the day seldom falls. So it is necessary to replace the warm water in the field with the cool one in order to decrease the temperature in the field. To leave the warm water in the field at night is like trying to sleep under a thick quilt in the midsummer night. But as Yonbaek Plain is short of water supply it is impossible to change the water on a regular basis, and this leads to improper development of stems and the rotting of roots, and thus the per-hectare yield is some tons less than other regions.
Giving such a succinct explanation, Kim Il Sung said that water is essential for rice farming. Then, he took a measure to solve the water problem in the plain.
The President’s words helped the agricultural officials and workers to realize what the core is in the farming in paddy fields.
