Unceremonious Trip
The day when he made a historic address to his fellow countrymen on his triumphal return to the homeland, President Kim Il Sung headed for his dear home village of Mangyongdae. Getting to the Sunhwa Ferry, he got aboard a small boat. Seeing the blue water of the Sunhwa River that reminded him of old memories, he fell into deep emotion.
Many years later, he recalled: The sound of a washerwoman’s club and the smell of young pine trees on Mangyong Hill which greeted me that day are still fresh in my memory….When a cow mooed on the Kalmaeji Plain, I felt a lump in my throat at the sight of my native place, something which I experienced for the first time in many years.
Everyone cherishes a memory of his or her native home, and yet Kim Il Sung felt still greater, unusual emotion about his home village since he had traversed a bloody road of anti-Japanese struggle for 20 years after he left Mangyongdae.
There are stories about return home of a lot of illustrious men in the world. Unlike them, Kim Il Sung paid a visit to his home village of Mangyongdae without any ceremony, just like he had returned to his homeland, although he had achieved the great cause of national liberation and Party founding.
