The First Electric Locomotive of Korea

One August day in 1961 President Kim Il Sung visited a factory to see the first electric locomotive the Korean workers and technicians had made. Shaking hands with each of the technicians who had designed and manufactured the locomotive themselves, he praised them again and again, saying they had done a great thing. He said: How good it is we have made the electric locomotive with our own hands! We have long struggled under the banner of self-reliance, and it was good that we have provided you with education.
At that moment an accompanying official, recalling the fact that a foreigner had said that Korea could hardly manufacture an electric locomotive, said that he was exhilarated to see the electric locomotive made by the Koreans.
Affirming his words, Kim Il Sung said satisfactorily that the Korean workers and technicians had successfully made the electric locomotive refuting the foreigner’s words. Stressing that self-reliance was the best way, he gave a proud name of “Red Flag” to the Korean locomotive.
